Customer should be linked to affiliate. Doing this with referral link assumes client enters full link which may not happen.
The idea of using Coupons or Discount Codes (plugin) is a good. Coupon given from affiliate (i.e. affiliate name card showing coupon) to customer should only be valid one time during Checkout. However, the same coupon can be used by other customers.
